![]() ![]() ![]() That said, let’s see if we can address these objectives of my redesign. There may be other issues I’m not addressing here-and I may be looking into changes that the majority of the userbase wouldn’t feel need to be addressed. These are changes I’m suggesting based on my own experience using the app, and based on some of the things I’ve learned from other projects. I should note that as I said above, I didn’t have the time or resources to really do any testing. We’ll be expanding slightly on the sorting tools shown here. The alphabet here is helpful to quickly jump to a letter/section on the artists tab, but it’s quite small and can be hard to interact with. ![]() I think we can divide them a bit better.į. The bottom navigation will receive a small redesign with the icons, and I think I’ll remove the “for you” item. We can add something here that the average user will benefit more from.ĭ. I think the play here is to keep the tools, but put them somewhere else. There’s a bunch of cool tools here, but they all look similar and I generally don’t use any of them. This is what I’m talking about when I say the app can feel cluttered. I like what they’re doing here with collections. If I were looking for performances I’d go to YouTube.ī. I’d have to do some user testing to be sure, but they just don’t seem like the sort of thing you come to this app for. As mentioned above, the Shots feel like they’re given too much priority on the home page. We’ll keep them on the home page, but I believe it makes more sense to put the tabs and chords for the user to look up first.Ī. The shots-which are clips of people playing music-are a neat addition, though I feel they’re given too much priority. I come to the app to learn to play music, not to see other people play. It’s a small change, but one that will improve things a lot, I feel. Some of the text is small on the app, and I think that headers could stand out better. I’m going to see if I can make that a bit easier to navigate. I think that while the Ultimate Guitar app does a lot well, it can be a bit cluttered. With that figured out, I’d like to go over the objectives for this redesign: So you’ll notice a slight change in screen size between the original and redesign. This is a redesign, not a change to the structure of the app or its tools.Īs a side-note, I took the photos of the current app on my phone, which has a differently sized screen than the most common mobile screen resolutions. For example, I shouldn’t remove key functionalities or add major new components. The content should remain pretty much the same, and I should use existing structures as a reference to build anything new that needs to be created. Similar to the prior note, I shouldn’t make any massive changes. At the end of the project it should still look like an Ultimate Guitar app. By this I’m referring to the color palette, fonts, and general aesthetic of the application. To make sure I stay on track, I always set a few ground rules alongside the objectives: Additionally, since these are projects I do as thought experiments on the side of my actual work, I can never go as in depth with the user testing and research as I would normally. I never want to lose sight of the application as it currently is, since it was built that way for a reason. So, I suppose I’m going to redesign a few screens. The home screen doesn’t have much of interest to me-somebody looking for chords and tabs-which is what I assume (based on absolutely no testing at all) the average user is actually interested in. That said, some of the app’s screens feel a bit cluttered and hard to read. Overall, it’s a great tool with a small collection of helpful additions like a tuner and interactive chord library for guitars. A while back they also added a way to link the app with Spotify, so I can click a button and instantly search for tabs/chords to the song I’m currently listening to. ![]() I found Ultimate Guitar and its mobile app extremely helpful for finding songs to play. Nothing too impressive, but enough to play some fun songs. A few years ago I taught myself how to play some basic guitar, bass, and ukulele. ![]()
